Two killed, 15 wounded in Kashmir road accidents
May 11th, 2011 - 5:59 pm ICT by IANSSrinagar, May 11 (IANS) Two people were killed and 15 wounded in separate road accidents in Jammu and Kashmir Wednesday, police said.
Police here said that a truck carrying army supplies fell into a deep gorge after the driver lost control in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district Wednesday.
“The driver of the truck and a porter were killed on the spot while four army personnel and two porters sustained injuries in the accident. The injured have been admitted to a hospital in Kupwara,” a senior police officer said.
In another accident, a car hit a motorcycle in Zakoora area of summer capital Srinagar Wednesday afternoon, resulting in critical injuries to the motorcycle rider who was immediately admitted to a hospital.
Four other people were injured when a motorcycle and a mini-bus hit pedestrians here in separate accidents.
A car turned turtle on the road near Awantipora town of south Kashmir’s Pulwama district, some 30 km from here, causing injuries to the vehicle’s four occupants.
Traffic authorities have started a campaign against rash and negligent driving in Srinagar and other towns of the Valley.
“While heavy fines are imposed on erring drivers, an awareness campaign has also been started here to educate the drivers and passengers of public transport vehicles about road safety rules,” an officer of the local traffic department said.
