Srinagar, March 12 (IANS) Two separatist guerrillas were killed in a gunfight with security forces in south Kashmir Saturday morning. The slain guerrillas had snatched weapons from local policemen last week, police said.

Ashfaq Chopan and Khurshid Yatoo, both locals, were killed in Haftipora village of Shopian district, 67 km from here, a senior police officer told IANS.

“The slain militants were responsible for snatching the service weapons of two policemen in Yaripora village of Shopian district last week. The stolen INSAS rifle and AK 47 rifle have been recovered from their possession,” the officer said.

The identity of the outfit to which the slain guerrillas belonged is being established, police said.

The operation was carried out jointly by Jammu and Kashmir Police and the counter-insurgency Rashtriya Rifles.

“No collateral damage to civilian life or property occurred during the gunfight,” the officer confirmed.
