Two guerrillas killed, army major injured in Kashmir (Lead)

Srinagar, July 9 (IANS) Two separatist guerrillas were killed and an army major was injured in a gunfight in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district Saturday.

Security forces surrounded a house in Gulshanabad (Natib) village of Pulwama district, 42 km from here, late Friday night, a police officer said.

“Security forces surrounded a house late last (Friday) night where three militants had taken shelter. The militants were challenged to lay down their weapons Saturday morning but they started firing, triggering a gunfight,” the officer told IANS.

“Two militants have been killed and searches are on in the area. One major of the Rashtriya Rifles also sustained injuries,” the officer said.

Police denied earlier reports that a minor girl and an old lady were holed up inside the house.
