Two foreign guerrillas killed in Kashmir’s Sopore (Second Lead)
May 27th, 2011 - 7:56 pm ICT by IANSSrinagar, May 27 (IANS) Two foreign guerrillas of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) outfit were killed in a gunfight with security forces in north Kashmir’s Sopore town Friday while a third managed to escape, police said.
Two LeT militants have been killed in a gunfight with the police and army in Nowpora area of Sopore, said a police statement released here.
“Acting on specific information about the presence of armed militants in Nowpora area of Sopore, police and 22 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) laid a siege to the area today (Friday). An encounter ensued, in which two militants were killed. The killed militants have been identified as Omais and Qari Anas. Both the killed militants are foreigners and belong to the militant outfit LeT,” it added.
Earlier reports said a patrol squad of the security forces was fired upon by the guerrillas in Nowpora area of Sopore town, 54 km from Srinagar.
It was also reported that one of the guerrillas took shelter in a house in the densely populated area. Security forces began to evacuate residents from the area so that an operation against the holed-up guerrilla could be undertaken.
However, it is believed the guerrilla managed to escape as the security forces had to proceed with utmost caution in the area to ensure no damage to civilian life or property occurred during the operation.
Meanwhile, two guerrillas, including a top militant of the Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) who was a Pakistani national, were killed in a fierce gunbattle with security forces in south Kashmir’s Shopian district, police said Friday.
A senior police officer said troops of 44 Rashtriya Rifles (RR), paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) troops and local police jointly surrounded a house in Bon Keller village of Shopian district, 45 km from Srinagar, Thursday.
“The cordon around the house was laid on specific information about the presence of a group of militants inside. The holed-up militants opened fire at the advance party of the security forces, triggering an encounter,” the officer said.
The gunfight ended late Thursday night after both the JeM guerrillas were killed. They included Qari Zubair, a Pakistani national who was a divisional commander of the outfit, he said.
Two houses were damaged during the shoot-out. Police also said the other slain guerrilla was a local.
