Transport Minister Joshi wants road safety to be incorporated in curriculum

New Delhi, Mar 25 (ANI): Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways C.P Joshi today said that “Road Safety” should be incorporated in school education curriculum all over the country at the earliest.

Addressing the “12th Meeting of the National Road Safety Council (NRSC)” organised by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways here today, he said that a proper and practical road safety curriculum should be developed for this purpose as it will have a long lasting impact on the minds of our young children.

He said that a “Pilot Project” on Electronic surveillance of Truck drivers should be launched to check their errant behaviour.

He said that the overloaded vehicles will not be permitted on ply on national highways for the sake of other commuters.He also stressed on the modifications in the methodology of issuing Driving Licenses and said that this mater should be looked in to seriously.

Expressing his concern on unsatisfactory Motor Driving training, he said that there should be proper provision for skilled Motor Driving training. The driving skill of drivers should be enhanced and it should come under the “Skill category”.

Joshi emphasized on the need to integrate “Information Technology (IT)” in road safety measures as it will help in getting the timely information of road accidents and also in providing the proper care to the injured persons on the spot.

Voicing his concerns about Road Safety, he said that it had acquired global dimensions with the UN General Assembly resolution proclaiming a Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2020 which aims to save lives by halting the increasing trends in road traffic deaths and injuries world-wide.

He further said that to address important road safety measures, four ‘Working Groups on Road Safety’ will be constituted soon, who will submit their reports within three months.

He called upon the participating State Ministers of Transport and other representatives to set their priorities for road safety measures and asked them to devise ways as to how the best road safety practice of one state can be implemented in other states too. There should be a proper classification of types of road accidents.

Laying emphasis on good quality of Roads, he said that all State Governments will have to take into consideration the needs of all road users particularly the needs of vulnerable road users while making policy decisions that impact on road safety.

Meanwhile, Jatin Prasad, Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways said that the main thrust of accident prevention and control across the world has been on “4 Es” including education, enforcement, engineering and environment and care of road accident victims.

“The Government is focusing on all these four approaches in its policies and programmes,” he added. (ANI)
