Transgenders hold pride march in New Delhi
November 28th, 2010 - 10:08 pm ICT by ANINew Delhi, Nov.28 (ANI): Lesbian, Gay, Bisexuals and Transgenders (LGBT) participated in the third pride march here on Sunday.
They said the Delhi High Court decision to decriminalise homosexuality by redefining Section-377 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) have improved things but this is just the a beginning for them.
Amitava Sarkar, a transgender activist, said there are a lot of problems still faced by the homosexuals.
“It actually starts from family level, then school level. We cannot get right to education, then at jobs also, we cannot get the respect. So, there are so many cases. Even in service areas, we cannot get any kind of services for a person like a trans, or me, who is quite feminine. It is very difficult to get proper kind of services,” said Sarkar.
Another transgender activist Mohnish said this concept of Gay Parade started way back in 1969.
“This is a concept which dates back to the stone wall 1969, when there was gay bar that was raided in New York. That was the first protest happened back in 1969 and after that every year gay pride is taken out all over the world. And in Delhi, this is the third year that you are seeing; this is the third edition of Delhi Queer Pride,” said Mohnish. (ANI)
