Top Hizbul militant killed in Kashmir gunfight
March 2nd, 2011 - 9:31 pm ICT by IANSSrinagar, March 2 (IANS) A self-styled divisional commander of the outlawed Hizbul Mujahideen was killed Wednesday in a gun battle with security forces in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pulwama district, police said.
According to an officer, the army’s counter-insurgency unit Rashtriya Rifles and the Special Operations Group (SOG) of the state police surrounded a house in Dadsar village Wednesday afternoon after getting intelligence inputs.
“The hiding militant was challenged to surrender upon which he opened gunfire with an automatic on the troops, triggering a gunfight,” a senior police officer told IANS here.
“Shabir Ahmad, a divisional commander of the Hizbul Mujahideen, was killed in the gun battle and a security force trooper was injured,” he said.
