Timarpur residents protest over drowned children’s deaths
March 6th, 2010 - 9:28 pm ICT by ANINew Delhi, Mar 6 (ANI): Agitated residents of Timarpur village on Saturday staged a protest against the Delhi Government following drowning of four children in a sewer.
Protestors demanded immediate action against the negligent Delhi Jal Board (DJB) officials.
“Delhi government has announced a compensation of 1,00 000 rupees for the family of the deceased children. We will try to provide more relief to their family if needed. Chief minister has said that whoever is behind this negligence would be punished,” said Congress MLA Surendra Pal Singh Bittu from Timarpur constituency.
The children got drowned on Friday after falling into a pit purportedly dug by the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) to lay a water pipeline in the area.
The incident took place about 9 p.m. on Friday when the four children identified as Vikas, Atul, Ritesh and Narender, all residents of Gopalpur village area in Timarpur, went near the sewer to collect their ball.
Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, meanwhile, has ordered a probe into the incident and asked for a reply to be submitted within four days. (ANI)
