Tigress’ death: Jairam Ramesh seeks report from Madhya Pradesh Government
May 27th, 2010 - 3:40 pm ICT by ANINew Delhi, May 27 (ANI): Union Minister of State for Environment and Forests Jairam Ramesh on Thursday sought a report from the Madhya Pradesh Government over the death of a tigress in the Bandhavgarh Sanctuary.
On May 19, a ten-year-old tigress was reportedly killed after it was hit by a tourist vehicle in the Tala Forest Range of the sanctuary.
Her death left three cubs orphaned.
Taking serious note of the matter, Ramesh asked Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan to personally supervise the investigation into the incident.
The Madhya Pradesh Government has constituted a committee under the state’s Additional Principle Chief Conservator of Forest (PCCF) Dharmendra Negi to probe the matter.
Wildlife activists have, however, demanded an investigation either by the Crime Investigation Department (CID) or the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
The Madhya Pradesh Government has suspended three forest officials for alleged negligence.
This is the second tiger death in the Bandhavgarh sanctuary due to a vehicle hit.
In an earlier incident, in April 2009, a tiger had died after being hit by a tourist vehicle. (ANI)
