Tibetans in exile protest against China in Dharamsala
April 24th, 2011 - 10:20 pm ICT by ANIDharamsala, Apr 24(ANI): Activists of the Tibetan Women’s Association (TWA) on Sunday organized a protest rally in Dharamsala against Chinese atrocities in Tibet’s Ngawa city.
Hundreds of protestors including TWA activists, Gu Chu Sum Movement of Tibet monks and local school children participated in the rally.
“According to the Tibetans living here in exile, we are getting information on a daily basis from Tibet of the very grim situation inside Tibet, where there is brutal clampdown on the Tibetans and the monks living in the Ngawa region, therefore now the Tibetans in exile are appealing to the governments of the world, to the International Human Rights Organizations, to the United Nations to intervene right now because the situation is getting really urgent,” said Dhardon Sharling, TWA spokesperson.
According to reports, after Chinese troops occupied the Kirti Monastery, Phuntsok, a 20-year-old monk committed self-immolation on March 16 in protest.
The Chinese troops have sealed the monastery making it impossible for monks to move out and devotees to offer food to the monks.
Between March 16 and April 12, 17 monks from the Kirti Monastery and 17 other local Tibetans have been arrested.
“The entire Ngaba region is in a crisis, is in an emergency and therefore (there) is a dire need for international intervention and for free media coverage in the region. Therefore one of our demands for today’s protest rally is to seek an international outcry on the siege that is happening inside Tibet,”" said Dhardon Sharling.
Tibet has been under Chinese occupation ever since the Chinese army invaded it in 1950.
An estimated 80,000 Tibetans along with their spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, had arrived in India in 1959 after an unsuccessful uprising against the Chinese rule. (ANI)
