Dharamshala, Mar 11 (ANI): Authorities in Dharamshala have halted a solidarity march by exiled Tibetans on the occasion of the 49th anniversary of the Tibetan Uprising Day.
Over 100 exiled Tibetans were stopped from reaching the Tibetan border.
Kangra District Police said they were ordered to stop the march as it violated an understanding between the Government and the Dalai Lama of not carrying out any ‘anti-China’ political activities on Indian soil.
“They have been served with a notice because they had violated the understanding between the Government and the Dalai Lama. They have been restrained within the jurisdiction of Kangra District.” said S. Thakur, Assistant Superintendent of Police, Kangra.
He further said that the future course of action is yet to be decided but warned the marchers not to violate this order. According to reports, some marchers were detained over fears that they could possibly sneak into China, Tibet or Nepal.
The marchers said the police came to them with a notice that said the Central Government has asked them not to leave Dharamshala.
The Dalai Lama has been campaigning for greater autonomy for Tibet.
Tibetans living in India have urged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to raise the Tibetan issue with China.
An estimated 13,40,00 Tibetans live in exile, a majority of them in India and Nepal. (ANI)
