Tibetan exiles criticize China’s stance over Obama-Dalai Lama meeting

Dharamsala (Himachal Pradesh), Feb 3 (ANI): Tibetan exiles have expressed annoyance over China’s opposition to a proposed meeting between US President Barack Obama and exiled Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, saying it shows China’s apprehension.
Claiming the matter to be highly sensitive, China’s Foreign Ministry on Wednesday said that it was ‘resolutely opposed’ to any meeting between Obama and the Dalai Lama.
Thubten Samphel, the spokesperson of the Tibetan- government in exile said in Dharamsala that US should facilitate dialogue between its envoys and the representatives of the Chinese government in order to resolve Tibet issue.
Samphel said, “I think it indicates their nervousness on the issue of Tibet, being what they call international eyes, that the wider world recognising that there is problem in Tibet and China should do something about it.”
A Tibetan exile termed China’s stance in the matter as ridiculous.
Tenzin, a Tibetan activist said, “I think this is another ridiculous thing that China has done. This is a clear sign that they are not ready to change. They have always been criticising the visit.”
“I think this is just another thing that China is doing and it is really ridiculous,” he added.
However, the White House has ignored China’s caveat, saying that Obama still plans to meet the Dalai Lama.
The White House has however, not announced a schedule till date with respect to Obama’s meeting with the Dalai Lama. (ANI)
