Tibetan Buddhist monks protest against China in Delhi
May 1st, 2011 - 5:28 pm ICT by ANINew Delhi, May 1 (ANI): Condemning the alleged lockdown of the Kirti Monastery in Tibet by Chinese forces, hundreds of Buddhist monks, along with Tibetan activists, undertook a peace rally here today
Praying for peace, the monks and activists flocked to a prominent cathedral in New Delhi to spread the message of universal brotherhood and harmony.
Demanding the immediate withdrawal of Chinese troops from the monastery, the activists expressed concern at the human rights excesses afflicted on the monks.
“The situation is very tense over there. The Chinese are capturing all monks. 300 monks are missing right now. Food supply is also cut off and movement across the Kirti monastery is also completely cut off. The area is fully restricted. Forces have surrounded Kirti monastery,” said Ishi Dolma, a Tibetan activist.
Dolma also urged governments across the world to support their struggle.
“We want to give the message to the world, firstly to the Indian government and its people, that we are in real danger and our situation is really bad. We would like to urge the Indian government to support us, help solve this long-standing conflict afflicted upon the Tibetan people, ” Dolma said
According to reports, after Chinese troops occupied the Kirti Monastery, Phuntsok, a 20-year-old monk committed self-immolation on March 16 in protest.
The Chinese troops have sealed the monastery making it impossible for monks to move out and devotees to offer food to the monks.
Between March 16 and April 12, 17 monks from the Kirti Monastery and 17 other local Tibetans have been arrested.
Tibet has been under Chinese occupation ever since the Chinese army invaded it in 1950. (ANI)
