August 23rd, 2010 - 9:43 pm ICT by ANICharaipung Area (Sibsagar) (Assam), Aug.23 (ANI): Tension prevailed on Monday in Charaipung area along the border of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh after a militant group demolished an under-construction barrack of Assam police in the area.
Suspected activists of the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (Khaplang) (NSCN-K) claimed that the area where the outpost was erected belonged to them.
They also fired at an Assam police picket and injured a constable.
Police personnel of both the States and the Central Paramilitary Forces personnel, meanwhile, have started joint patrolling to bring the situation under control.
“We don’t want environment of tension. We want to establish peace, make a condition for peace. People of both the States should live peacefully. The problem should be resolved. But we will not give up land. We can give oil but not land. We should get our land,” said Bishnu Jyoti Borgohain, General Secretary of the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU).
The miscreants have been raiding residences, and resorting to firing and arson since August 14, and have set ablaze several houses and attacked police pickets in Charaipung and Bimolapur area. (ANI)
