Teenager killed in Baramulla clashes
October 3rd, 2009 - 12:00 am ICT by IANS ( Leave a comment )Srinagar, Oct 2 (IANS) A 13-year-old boy was killed and eight others, including two policemen, wounded in clashes that erupted in Baramulla in north Kashmir after the Friday prayers.
Police said the violence began in Baramulla town, 55 km from capital Srinagar, immediately after the Friday prayers when groups of youths took to the streets shouting anti-India slogans.
The youths later pelted stones at the police stations, prompting police to baton charge them.
However, when the stone throwing intensified, police began lobbing teargas to control the situation.
A teargas shell directly hit 13-year-old Irfan Ahmad Lone, who was shifted to hospital where he died of injuries later.
The death of Irfan triggered more tension and violence as mobs resorted to heavy pelting on the security forces.
The situation in the town located on the Srinagar-Muzaffarabad road was very tense as the people brought the body from the hospital and carried it to old Baramulla town.
District authorities were watching the situation and could impose curfew in parts of the town, a senior official said.
Authorities moved fresh police reinforcements to the town.
In adjoining Sopore town, 54 km from here, police resorted to teargassing and baton charges to disperse a stone pelting mob that took to the streets after the Friday prayers. A youth was critically injured in the anti-India protests.
