Tamil Nadu’s regional party demands lifting of ban on LTTE
July 29th, 2009 - 9:23 pm ICT by ANIChennai, July 29 (ANI): Demanding the lifting of the ban on the LTTE, members of a regional party based in Tamil Nadu staged a demonstration outside the Central Station in Chennai on Wednesday.
Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi party members also demanded equal rights for the Sri Lankan Tamilians, residing as refugees in India since many years.
The demonstration was led by senior party leader and Member of Parliament, Thol Thirumavalavan.
“Now that the LTTE has been wiped out in Sri Lanka, considering that organisation as a banned outfit has no meaning. Hence the Indian government must lift the ban completely. Simultaneously Sri Lankan Tamils who were compelled to flee to India and have been residing here for years must be given equal rights,” said Thirumavalavan.
Raising the slogans, ‘We want justice, We want our rights’, the demonstrators sought rights for the Sri Lankan refugees at par with Indian citizens.
India banned the LTTE in 1991 when the former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi was blown up by a woman suicide bomber belonging to the outfit. (ANI)
