Swab samples not of Shopian victims, admits doctor
September 27th, 2009 - 11:46 pm ICT by IANSSrinagar, Sep 27 (IANS) In a startling revelation, the gynaecologist who conducted autopsies on the bodies of the two women who were raped and murdered in south Kashmir’s Shopian town has admitted that she did not take the vaginal swabs of the victims but submitted samples of other women, sources here said Sunday.
According to the sources, the gynaecologist, who had submitted two slides purportedly prepared from the vaginal swabs of Nilofar Jan, 22, and her sister-in-law Asiya Jan, 17, confessed before the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) team probing the case that the samples had instead been taken from other women in the maternity ward of the Pulwama hospital where she was then posted.
Experts from the forensic laboratory in New Delhi had discovered that the DNA from the slides sent to them neither matched with the DNA samples of any of the two victims nor that of any of the four accused police officers who had been suspended and arrested for destroying evidence in the case.
The CBI team has already obtained permission from the Shopian district magistrate to exhume the bodies of the two victims for gathering evidence in the case. The exhumation is likely to take place Monday.
