Thiruvananthapuram, Apr 28 (ANI): Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Sushma Swaraj, has backed the CPI (M)-led Kerala government’s demand for a countrywide ban on endosulfan pesticide.
Speaking to reporters here, Swaraj said the pesticide should be banned in the country by the central government.
“During election and campaign in Manjeshwar and Kasargod, I personally spoke from that dais that we support the ban, Karnataka government has already banned, but the state governments can only ban for two months. Therefore, Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa has also written to the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh that it should be banned from the centre,” She added
Swaraj further said the central government must take a decision for the safety of the people.
“Naturally the manufacturers will lobby, but the government has to take a policy decision in favour of the people who are being handicapped,” said Swaraj.
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) had recommended a ban on endosulfan but the central government is not willing to impose it saying that there is no scientific evidence to prove its harmful effect on human body.
The use of endosulfan has been banned in Kerala since 2005 after various diseases were reported from the northern district of Kasargod, where the pesticide had been sprayed on cashew plantations for 20 years. (ANI)
