Supreme Court adjourns hearing of Mayawati disproportionate assets case for six weeks
July 13th, 2009 - 1:59 pm ICT by ANINew Delhi, July 13 (ANI): The Supreme Court on Monday adjourned the hearing of the five-year-old disproportionate assets case against Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati for six weeks.
The hearing of the case was deferred at the request of the Uttar Pradesh Government.
On Saturday, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had informed the apex court that it had prepared a chargesheet against Mayawati. The CBI counsel said there were no changes to its stance what of January 12, when it stated that there was enough evidence to prosecute Mayawati.
CBI had questioned her for the declared assets of rupees one crore in 2003 going up to Rs.50 crore in 2007. It said that there was “ample evidence” to show she had amassed wealth disproportionate to her known sources of income.
Mayawati had filed a petition in May 2008 seeking the quashing of criminal proceedings against her in the case alleging it was political vendetta.
She claimed that she had received the money through donations from party workers. (ANI)
