Stones pelted at Mirwaiz Umer in Sopore
December 16th, 2011 - 9:26 pm ICT by IANSSrinagar, Dec 16 (IANS) Mirwaiz Umer Farooq, chairman of the moderate Hurriyat group, was Friday attacked with stones by some assailants in north Kashmir’s Sopore town, police sources said here.
Mirwaiz Umer had gone to Sopore to address a Friday congregation there. When after the congregation at Khankah area, he refused to lead a procession towards the town’s main thoroughfare, some youth got infuriated and hurled stones and at the Mirwaiz, a senior police officer said.
The Mirwaiz, however, escaped unhurt and returned to Srinagar.
“Police have registered an FIR in the stone pelting incident that occurred today (Friday) in Khankah area of Sopore town,” the officer said.
