Srinagar-Jammu highway opened for one-way traffic
February 17th, 2011 - 2:11 pm ICT by IANSSrinagar, Feb 17 (IANS) The strategic Srinagar-Jammu national highway was opened for one-way traffic Thursday as the stranded vehicles were allowed to move from Jammu to Srinagar, an official said here.”No vehicle will be allowed to move in the opposite direction,” a senior official of the traffic department said.
The strategic highway, the Valley’s only road link to the outside world, had remained closed for the last four days because of landslides at many places on the over 300-km-long route.
All essential supplies to the Valley and the Ladakh region are routed through this highway.
The temporary closure of this road during the winter months is often encashed by unscrupulous traders who profit by creating artificial scarcity of essentials in the Valley.
