Sports Minister Maken promises to bear medical expenses of Arunima
April 18th, 2011 - 5:11 pm ICT by ANINew Delhi/Lucknow, Apr 18 (ANI): Union Sports Minister Ajay Maken on Monday promised to bear the medical expenses of injured national volleyball player Arunima Sinha, who lost her leg after being thrown out from a running train near Bareilly earlier this month and is presently undergoing treatment at Lucknow’s CSM Medical University.
Maken said he had asked ministry officials to ensure Sinha received Rs Rs. 2,00,000 for her treatment.
“I have asked the sports ministry officials to ensure that the Rs two lakh medical treatment, which we have promised earlier should reach her. I am going there with a team of doctors and we will see to it, if it is possible or if it is required, we will bring her to Delhi,” Maken told reporters on the sidelines of a function in the national capital.
Maken had earlier on April 14 announced a medical compensation of Rs. 2,00,000 for Arunima.
“If everything is going on fine there, then we will leave her in the hospital at Lucknow, but whatever treatment expenses would be for her, the sports ministry is going to bear,” he added ahead of his visit to Lucknow’s CSM medical university to meet Arunima.
Meanwhile, Uttar Pradesh Sports Minister Ayodhya Pal Singh, who met Arunima earlier this morning, offered a government job to her.
Twenty three-year-old Arunima lost her leg after she was pushed from the Padmavat Express in Bareilly on April 11 by three men, who were trying to rob her.
The incident took place between Chenati and Bareilly railway stations when she was on her way to New Delhi to appear in a CISF recruitment examination.
The police had lodged an FIR under section 307 (attempt to murder) and 393 (attempt to robbery).
Arunima was earlier undergoing treatment at the Bareilly District Hospital, where she was admitted on April 12. (ANI)
