Karimganj, Apr 1 (ANI): Launching a blistering attack on the opposition Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Friday said the law and order situation in Assam has changed tremendously in the last ten years with the Tarun Gogoi Government bringing peace and development back in the state.
Addressing an election rally at Neelam Bazaar in Assam’s Karimganj District, Gandhi said: “The situation changed tremendously during the last ten years of Congress rule under Tarun Gogoi, with peace and development returning to the state and schemes being speedily implemented.”
“The state was in an all-round mess ten years ago when the AGP was in power with even government employees not getting salaries and people were not able to go out of their homes because of poor law and order,” she added.
The UPA chairperson, who arrived here to address election meetings at Karimganj, Bokajan and Khumtai, said the Congress Government in Assam has laid stress on education, as the party considers it an investment for the children’s future.
“The state government has already given computers to children who secured first division in the matric examination and cycles to girl students of class VIII so that they could go to school without any difficulty,” said Gandhi.
“The Congress also proposes to set up a Barak Valley Engineering College and a Polytechnic Institute in Karimganj,” she added.
The leaders of the AGP, Bharatiya Janata Party Party (BJP), besides top leaders from Left parties; AIUDF and other political outfits are also leaving no stones unturned in wooing the voters in their last minute campaigning strategy.Assam will hold two-phase elections in which 62 constituencies will go to polls on April 4 and 11.
In all, 23,813 polling booths have been set up for 18 million voters to exercise their franchise. (ANI)
