Firing was still on in the area.
A senior police officer said a group of heavily armed separatist guerrillas trying to infiltrate into the Indian side opened fire at the troops guarding the LoC in Shamsnag area of Kupwara.
He said the troops also retaliated and in the exchange of fire so far the JCO was killed and two others were critically wounded.
The injured soldiers were evacuated to hospital for treatment.
“Troops are busy searching the area. Intermittent firing is also continuing. The number of militants in the infiltrating group is not known,” he added.
