Soldier injured in Kashmir gunfight (Lead)

Srinagar, Feb 21 (IANS) A soldier was injured Tuesday as the gunfight between security forces and a lone separatist guerrilla holed up inside a house in north Kashmir’s Sopore town continued till late into the evening, police said.

Security forces had earlier Tuesday surrounded the house in Sopore, 52 km from Srinagar, following information about the presence of guerrillas there.

“One soldier has been injured in the gunfight so far which is still going on in the area where a militant is holed up inside a residential house in bypass road locality of the town,” Sopore’s Superintendent of Police Syed Imtiyaz Hussain told IANS around 7 p.m.

The injured soldier has been shifted to hospital for treatment.

Hussain said the security forces are proceeding with caution to ensure that there is no loss of civilian life or demage to property in the area.

Sopore has been the hotbed of separatist violence during the last 22 years. It was to fight the guerrilla presence in the area that Sopore was declared a separate police district four years back.
