Sitaram Yechury presents Bill on road safety
July 21st, 2010 - 10:57 pm ICT by ANINew Delhi, July 21 (ANI): Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Transport, Tourism and Culture Sitaram Yechury presented a report on ‘The National Road Safety and Traffic Management Board Bill’ in the national capital on Wednesday.
On the occasion, Yechury said the Bill related to the establishment of road safety and should take care of road accidents in the country.
“The main issue is that this bill was relating to the establishment of a ‘National Road Safety and Traffic Management Board’ to take care of the growing accidents on the roads of the country,” said Yechury.
He further said that according to the Planning Commission, the social cost of accidents is the highest in India.
“The planning commission study conducted some years ago had estimated that the social cost of the road accidents of India is as high as three percent of our GDP, and this is one of the highest (among) nations in the world,” said Yechury.
“The committee is concerned about improving road safety in the country and want roads to be better than international standards and to achieve that technical issues have to be properly evaluated and road infrastructure improved,” he added. (ANI)
