Sikhs in Pak facing social problems due to lack of representation

May 3rd, 2008 - 1:26 pm ICT by admin -

Lahore, May 3 (ANI): Sikhs in Pakistan face social and political problems because they lack proper representation in the country, said Dr Swaran Singh, the candidate for president of the Pakistan Sikh Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee (PSGPC).

He said that the Sikhs problems could be solved if the community was given representation in the government or if a Sikh was appointed an adviser to the Pakistan prime minister.

He also said that an adviser to the PM should be appointed to attract Sikh investors from other countries to invest in Pakistan.

Christians and Hindus had representations in the government, but Sikhs had yet to reach the assemblies, the Daily Times quoted him as saying.

Minority representatives in the assemblies supported their communities, but ignored the Sikhs of the country, he said and added that the Christians and Hindus did not have any idea about the problems faced by Sikhs.

He said many Sikh youths were deprived of quality higher education because they did not have any scholarship quota in the Higher Education Commission. The countrys poor Sikhs never received financial aid from the government, he said and added that Christian and Hindu widows received Rs 5000 a month as financial help from the government, but the Sikh widows were deprived of any such facility.
