SGPC protests against turban frisking at international airports
March 25th, 2011 - 12:56 pm ICT by ANIAmritsar, Mar.25 (ANI): The Sikh religious body, Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC), has strongly protested against turban frisking of Sikhs at various International airports and has passed a resolution over the issue at its annual budget session in Amritsar.
SGPC chief Avtar Singh Makkar said that the committee had written to the Government on several occasions on the issue, but no action has been taken yet.
He said: ” We have repeatedly urged the Prime Minister, the Home Minister and the Foreign Minister through letters that they should understand the gravity of the situation and SGPC has taken the stand from the first day that it is not the turban (honour) of a Sikh, but it is the turban of an Indian which is being insulted.”
” If the Indian Government is not acting on it, then I think that they have no right to rule this country as they are not doing anything against this insult,” he added.
The committee is strongly against the frequent incidents of Sikhs having to remove their turbans for getting themselves frisked at various airports across the world for security reasons.
The latest incident being of Amritinder Singh, golfer Jeev Milkha Singh’s coach, who was forced to take off his turban at the Milan airport. (ANI)
