Seven persons die of cold in quake-hit Balochistan

November 17th, 2008 - 4:12 pm ICT by ANI Tell a Friend -

Islamabad, Nov 17 (ANI): At least seven people, including a child and five women, died of chilling cold in the earthquake-hit Karezat tehsil of Balochistan province in Pakistan.

Quoting a TV report, the Daily Times reported that temperature in the area had fallen to minus 10 degree Celsius, but people have not yet been given tents to protect them against the intensifying clod.

Meanwhile, the International Labour Organisation (ILO) has started a programme titled Cash for Work through Taraqee Foundation in the villages of Ziarat district, Balochistan, worst affected by earthquake.

The idea is to enable people to come out of the trauma and in the process also earn some quick bucks.

ILO Country Director Donglin Li said by Sunday that the organisation had employed 86 men for removal of debris and 66 women for management of camp.

He said that through the programme the ILO had helped the earthquake-affected people start work immediately to overcome their trauma as well as increase their income.

This is a quick means to inject cash into the already demonetised economy and help the affected people quickly start rebuilding their lives, the country director said. (ANI)
