Manipur, Nov 26 (ANI): Security forces and the rebels belonging to the United National Liberation Front are engaged in a fierce gunbattle since Sunday in Manipurs Chandel District.
Heavy gunfight started at Somtal, Phoilen, Tuihung and other areas in the District on Sunday, officials said.
Since an intensive counter-insurgency operation was launched on November 18, security forces have secured many areas including L.Dongjoi Moljol, Phaisangjang and parts of Khengjoi hill range.
The security forces have also seized explosives.
The Army, Assam Rifles and other central Para-military forces were sent to launch a massive operation to drive out insurgents from the Khengjoi hill range, Sehlon and nearby areas in Chandel District, bordering Myanmar.
The proximity of the District to Myanmar makes its easy for the militants to escape. These militant outfits frequent the District en route Myanmar.
Each of the Manipurs nine Districts has been severely affected by militancy, but the hilly District of Chandel has witnessed one of the most persistent violence by the militants, in particular the UNLF. A total of 38 militancy-related fatalities were reported from Chandel in 2006. (ANI)
