Security beefed up in West Bengal after Sunday blasts in Assam
November 23rd, 2009 - 6:10 pm ICT by ANIKolkata, Nov.23 (ANI): Security measures have been stepped up in West Bengal, a day after bomb explosions rocked the neighbouring Assam state.
The two blasts occurred in Nalbari town about 70 kilometres from the Assam’s capital Dispur on Sunday, leaving six people killed and 40 others wounded Soon the state administration and the top brass of the police in West Bengal decided to deploy armed personnel at all-important places like shopping malls, railway stations, market places, places of worship, etc., besides setting up check posts at vantage points on the roads to keep a tab on the vehicles.
According to Inspector General of Police, North Bengal Range Kunda Lal Tamta, said that he had asked his counterparts in Assam to keep a strict vigil on the inter-state and India-Bangladesh border areas.
“We have spoken to our counterparts in Assam and alerted them to keep a strict vigil on the border areas. Apart from that Barobisha, Basirhat, Alipurduar and the adjacent areas are also under a strict vigil…..” said Kunda Lal Tamta, Inspector General of Police, North Bengal Range, Siliguri.
He further said that the Intelligence Bureau (IB), Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) and Subsidiary Intelligence Bureau (SIB) have also been contacted to look into the security aspect of the region.
Bombs were reportedly hidden in bicycles exploded in front of a police station at Nalbari and the chief of Assam state, Tarun Gogoi blamed the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) for the fatal explosions. (ANI)
