Security beefed-up in Mumbai ahead of 26/11 anniversary
November 23rd, 2009 - 9:58 pm ICT by ANIMumbai, Nov 23(ANI): Mumbai Police Commissioner D Shivanandan on Monday said that security has been beefed-up at major places in the city as a precautionary measure, prior to the first anniversary of the 26/11 terror attacks.
Security has been tightened at the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), Taj Hotel, Churchgate, Andheri Railway Station, among others.
Addressing the media on the sidelines of a seminar ‘preparedness to fight terrorism’, Shivanandan said: “If you recall the first explosion in 1993 serial blasts took place at the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE). Mumbai being the commercial capital of the country and BSE is the heart of Mumbai. We are careful and I think nobody should be critical of that. It is a precautionary measure.”
“We have also tighten security at other places like Taj Hotel, Churchgate, Andheri Railway Station,” he added.
On 26 November 2008, 10 heavily armed gunmen went on a rampage and attacked major landmarks in the city including two plush hotels and a Jewish centre.
Several people were held hostage for the next three days and at least 166 people were killed before NSG commandoes smoked out the last of the terrorists on November 28. (ANI)
