SC restrains Jats from blocking supply of essential commodities to Delhi
March 24th, 2011 - 2:09 pm ICT by ANINew Delhi, Mar 24 (ANI): The Jat panchayats have been directed by the Supreme Court not to block Delhi and stop the supply of essential commodities to the national capital.
The apex court has also directed the Uttar Pradesh and Haryana governments to ensure that the supply of water and essential commodities to Delhi is not stopped due to the Jat agitation for quota in central jobs.
The directive came on a petition filed by Delhi Government and Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) against the Jats threat to block supply of essential commodities.
The Jats, who have been demanding 27 per cent reservation in Central jobs under the OBC category, had threatened to block the rail route around Delhi if their demand was not met by March 25.
They had also threatened to cut off Delhi from the rest of north India in the next phase of their stir if the demand was not fulfilled by March 28.
The agitating Jats had earlier on Saturday cleared the railway tracks near Kafoorpur in Uttar Pradesh’s J P Nagar District following an order from the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court.
The tracks were cleared of the agitators after 15 days of protests.
During the agitation, the Railways had to cancel the services of some 400 trains and divert as many or short-terminate about 100 trains in the Moradabad division. (ANI)
