SC rejects Mayawati’s petition over the debated Ambedkar site
November 13th, 2009 - 5:55 pm ICT by ANINew Delhi, Nov 13 (ANI): The Supreme Court today rejected Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati’s appeal for permission to commence maintenance and other related works at the debated Ambedkar site in Lucknow.
A two-judge bench comprising Justice H S Bedi and Justice J M Panchal sensed that there was “no change in the state of affairs” to grant any respite to the State Government to go ahead with further construction at the Ambedkar site.
The apex court said that it would look into the petition on merit, when the matter would come up on November 30.
The Uttar Pradesh Government had filed an urgent application seeking consent to begin maintenance work on the plea that lakhs of people would be thronging the site on December 6, the birth anniversary of B R Ambedkar.
Senior counsel Abhishek Manu Singhvi, appearing for the opposing petitioner, Mithilesh Kumar Singh and Gomti Nagar Sanstha, resisted any such relief on the ground that the State Government cannot be believed, as it had earlier violated the undertaking given by it to the Supreme Court that there would be no construction activities.
Earlier, the apex court had reserved all construction and maintenance activities at the site, where statues of various Dalit icons including Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati are being built. (ANI)
