SC asks govt to appoint Lalit as special public prosecutor in 2G-scam case

New Delhi, Apr 11(ANI): The Supreme Court on Monday directed the Central government to issue a notification for the appointment of senior advocate U.U. Lalit as the special public prosecutor for trying former Telecom Minister A. Raja and others in the 2G spectrum case.

A bench of justices G.S. Singhvi and A.K. Ganguly said that Lalit will be at liberty to choose his team of prosecutors from the panel of advocates working for the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

The CBI had earlier filed its first chargesheet against Raja and some of his close aides in connection with the scam.

Besides, the four accused - Raja, former Telecom Secretary Siddharth Behura, Raja’s former personal assistant R.K.Chandolia, and telecom promoter Shahid Balwa, the CBI has also framed Gautam Doshi, Saurabh Papadiya, Hari Nayar, Sanjay Chandra and three companies - Unitech, Reliance Communications and Swan Telecom.

All the accused have been booked under sections 120(B) (criminal conspiracy), 468 (Forgery for purpose of cheating), 471 (using as genuine a forged document or electronic record), 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property) and 109 (abetment if the act abetted is committed in consequence, and where no express provision is made for its punishment) of the Indian Penal Code.
