New Delhi, Sept.18 (ANI): Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit today exhorted the city’s residents to abandon the use of plastic and use bags made of cloth or jute.
Speaking at the launch of the “Sheel Shera” initiative organized by the NGO Sahyog-Care for You, Dikshit stressed upon the need of using environment-friendly bags apart from promoting awareness on environment-related issues.
Describing plastic as harmful to society, she said Mother Earth has not accepted it and even animals have been exposed to the dangers of plastic.
She called upon the people to make their own bags with used clothes and give them a beautiful look.
The government has made strict provisions including fine and imprisonment for use of plastic bags in Delhi, she said, adding that NGOs can contribute substantially in this direction.
Dikshit expressed confidence that the “Sheel Shera” project would popularize the collection of polythene garbage.
A large number of school children were present on the occasion.
Sahyog is working with about 50 schools through the “Sheel Shera” project. (ANI)
