Sania-Bhupathi bring ecstasy to families

Hyderabad, Feb 1, (ANI): As tennis lovers across the country are celebrating the Grand Slam win of Sania Mirza and Mahesh Bhupathi at the Australian Open, the duos respective families are enjoying this special moment with ecstatic mood. Bhupathi and Mirza defeated Israel’’s Andy Ram and Frenchwoman Nathalie Dechy 6-3 6-1 in less than an hour at the famed Rold Laver Tennis Courts in Melbourne on Sunday. Although, Bhupathi had earlier won many Grand Slam titles in the doubles Category but for Sania it was the first Grand Slam since she became the first ever Indian to bag asenior Grand Slam title. Sania was the first Indian girl to be crowned with a Grand Slam title when she partnered Russia’’s Alisa Kleybanova to win the 2003 Wimbledon junior doubles title. Later, she became the first Indian woman to win a WTA event. Sania Mirza’’s mother Naseema Mirza was enthusiastic to share her elated feelings. “Let me thank Allah for making Sania win her first grand slam. We all were waiting for this day from a long time. We are all excited that she won a grand slam. There is no doubt that it is a mixed doubles, but grand slam title is grand slam title and we are very happy with her achievement. Mahesh Bhupathi won his seventh mixed doubles title and 11th overall. C. G. K. Bhupathi, father of Mahesh Bhupathi was also an excellent tennis player and represented India in the Davis Cup. CGK Bhupathi termed the victory of his son and Sania Mirza as a special achievement because both represented India. “Absolutely thrilled. Mahesh has won Grand Slam before also but this one is really special because it has come up with an Indian girl. So the two Indians winning a Grand Slam for us had happened seven years ago,” C G K Bhupathi said. Interestingly, Sunday’’s win by Bhupathi and Mirza was India’’s second title at this year’’s Australian Open after 16-year-old Yuki Bhambri had won the Junior Boys final on Saturday. (ANI)
