Kanpur/Lucknow/New Delhi, Jan.19 (ANI): Supporters of Samajwadi Party (SP) held protests in different parts of Uttar Pradesh to voice their concern against price rise and corruption on Tuesday.

Uttar Pradesh State unit head and party chief’s son Akhilesh Yadav led the protest.

Police baton charged the Samajwadi supporters, who had turned up in large numbers.

In Lucknow, a demonstration was led by party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav, who was later arrested by the Uttar Pradesh police.

“The common people are a worried lot today. The ones who are dying today are the ones with empty stomach,” Muylayam Singh Yadav told reporters before his arrest.

Meanwhile, in New Delhi, taking a dig at Yadav, Kalyan Singh, former leader of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) who had joined Samajwadi party for sometime, and former chief of Uttar Pradesh, termed the SP demonstration a ‘flop’ show.

“The demonstration was a flop. There was hardly any crowd. People’s faith in Mulayam Singh Yadav is slowly fading away,” Singh told reporters in national capital.

On Monday (January 18), Yadav had declared that he would hold a massive ‘Jan Andolan’ (public protest) in the state to highlight the failure of the federal and the state government in checking rising prices of essential commodities, corruption and police atrocities.

Yadav said on Monday that all sections of people were reeling under the impact of price rise, with pulses selling at rupees 90 to 100 rupees per kilogram and sugar rupees 50. Both the Central and the state government were responsible for the price rise, but they were just busy in blame-game. (ANI)
