Agra, Aug 19 (ANI): The opposition Samajwadi Party on Wednesday criticised the Congress-led UPA government at the Centre and the Mayawati Government in Uttar Pradesh on issues of rising prices, suicides by farmers and foreign policy.
Addressing the inaugural session of the party’s Special National Conference here, Samajwadi Party president Mulayam Singh Yadav called on party workers and activists to take part in a state-wide “Jail Bharo” (fill jails) agitation against the Mayawati government. The party also passed a political and a economic resolution, which accuses the Congress of adopting double standards while dealing with Mayawati’s Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP). The conference is being attended by about 10,000 Samajwadi Party delegates, most of them from Uttar Pradesh.
Former BJP leader Kalyan Singh was in attendance during the inaugural session, donning the party’s trademark red cap giving rise to speculations that he may formally join the Samajwadi Party.
Mulayam Singh said that Kalyan Singh would address the conference on Thursday. Kalyan Singh’s presence at the conference is being seen as an effort by Yadav to dismiss suggestions that Muslims were feeling alienated from the Samajwadi Party following the expulsion of firebrand leader Mohammed Azam Khan.
Kalyan Singh had won as an Independent from Etah with the Samajwadi Party’s support in this year’s general elections. (ANI)
