Roemer extends strong support for US-India counter-terrorism cooperation
June 11th, 2010 - 11:49 am ICT by ANINew Delhi, June 10 (ANI): U.S. Ambassador to India Timothy J. Roemer proudly conveyed his strong support for the Government of India/U.S. Government collaboration on the interview process in Chicago, saying “The Headley interviews were historic in the nature of security cooperation.
This strategic partnership is significant, substantive, and highly successful.”
He confirmed from Washington, DC today that a team of Government of India investigators had been granted direct access to David Headley, and had conducted a series of interviews with him related to terrorist activities in India.
The team arrived in the US on May 31, and their interviews with Mr. Headley began on June 3.
Ambassador Roemer praised the superb cooperation between the Indian team and their American counterparts throughout this process.
The Ambassador noted the depth and breadth of our partnership in this key area, including a counter-terrorism cooperation initiative, joint US-India work on mega-city policing, forensic lab training, intelligence sharing, sharing best practices, and cooperation on launching a National Counter-Terrorism Center.
He noted, “As I have mentioned previously, the U.S. Government worked continuously at the highest levels to ensure that this access occurred and was constructive in advancing our already unprecedented cooperation and information sharing on counter-terrorism issues.”
“I am proud to confirm today that these efforts were successful. As President Obama underscored last week during the U.S.-India Strategic Dialogue, India and the U.S. ‘are cooperating more closely than ever before against transnational threats,’ working to prevent terrorism that threatens both our countries and the world at large,” he added.
