Rizwanur case: Calcutta High Court to frame charges against Todi
March 21st, 2011 - 4:31 pm ICT by ANIKolkata, Mar 21 (ANI): The Calcutta High Court is expected to initiate the process for the framing of charges against industrialist Ashok Todi and six others accused for the murder of computer graphics teacher Rizwanur Rahman in September 2007.
The Supreme Court had earlier on March 1 set aside a Calcutta High Court order for a fresh Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the death of Kolkata-based design professional Rahman.
The apex court also said that no further custody was needed for Rizwanur’s father-in-law Ashok Todi, an industrialist based in Kolkata.
A Bench of Justices P Sathasivam and B S Chauhan had on February 22 reserved its verdict after concluding the hearing on cross appeals filed by Ashok Todi, whose daughter Priyanka had married Rizwanur.
The Calcutta High Court had on May 18 directed the CBI to start fresh investigation into Rizwanur’s murder case.
The court had affirmed that the investigation is inadequate and asked the agency to start a fresh investigation in the case.
Rizwanur’s body was found on the railway tracks between Biddhanagar Road and Dum Dum Junction on September 21, 2007, almost a month after his marriage to Todi’s daughter Priyanka.
Though police is convinced that it was a case of suicide, Rizwanur’s family members are not convinced and have moved the higher courts for a CBI inquiry.
Rizwanur was a 30-year-old computer graphic trainer working for a multi-media center.Todi heads the Rs. 400 crore firm Lux Hosiery.
It is believed that Rizwanur and 23-year-old Priyanka Todi secretly wed on August 18, 2007 with the help of the special Marriage Act and in the presence of close friends and colleagues. (ANI)
