New Delhi, July 27 (ANI): Uttar Pradesh Congress chief Rita Bahuguna Joshi met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh here on Monday.
She apprised him of the events after she was arrested for her remarks against Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati.
Joshi apprised the Prime Minister about the burning of her house by the activists of Mayawati’s Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) in Lucknow.
Accepting the inappropriateness of her remarks made during a public rally, Joshi said she was anguished over the case of compensation to rape victims and hence had made those remarks in the heat of the moment.
However, demanding action into the torching of her house and belongings, she said her party would not take any more injustice lying down.
“I did not mention any caste or community. I spoke out as a woman for women hoping to appeal the Chief Minister’s conscience as a woman. Since her party is losing mandate amongst the people, with this BSP got a convenient stick to beat Congress with. I tolerated it by staying in jail, but no more,” she said.
Commenting on the safety of women in Uttar Pradesh and the government’s attitude in this sensitive issue, she had voiced certain objectionable remarks against Mayawati while addressing a public rally of women in Moradabad.
Joshi was arrested after being charged with denigrating Dalits and Mayawati in a speech July 15.
On the same night, her house in Lucknow was set on fire, allegedly by a group of BSP workers.
Joshi was released from jail Saturday after being granted interim bail. (ANI)
