New Delhi, Apr 20 (ANI): Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Rajni Abbi was today elected the Mayor of Delhi defeating Congress nominee Savita Sharma by 88 votes.
Delhi University Law Professor Abbi got 170 votes, while Sharma secured 82 votes in the election, which was held at a special meeting of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi. Eight votes were declared invalid.
The mayoral polls witnessed stormy scenes earlier with the Congress members objecting to the candidature of Abbi alleging that she was holding an office of profit, as she was a Delhi University professor.
The BJP leaders, however, claimed that she had taken permission from Delhi University prior to contesting the MCD polls.
49-year-old Abbi replaced incumbent Prithvi Raj Sawhney. (ANI)
