New Delhi, Jan 12 (ANI): In view of the Railways having been identified as a soft target by extremists, terrorists and anti-social elements, the overall security system in Railways was reviewed at a high-level meeting here today.
At the meeting attended by Railway Minister Lalu Prasad and Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil it was decided to ensure better cooperation between the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and the Government Railway Police (GRP) of the respective State Governments.
For this purpose state-wise Nodal Officers will be nominated by the Railways Ministry, a government release said.
A mechanism for intelligence sharing and dissemination for action among the stakeholders will also be set up, the release added.
Lalu emphasised that passenger security will be accorded top most priority by the RPF and adequate funds will be made available for modernisation of the force.
It was also decided to initiate suitable action for increasing the strength of the RPF.
Lalu requested the Home Ministry to provide information about latest technology and equipment suitable for Railway security.
Senior officials of Railways and Home Ministries were also present at the meeting. (ANI)
