Protest against Israeli attack on pro-Palestinian peace activists staged in Delhi
June 2nd, 2010 - 9:43 pm ICT by ANI ( Leave a comment )New Delhi, June 2 (ANI): The ‘Committee for Solidarity with Palestine’ and the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) members took out a protest march here on Wednesday against the Israeli attack on a fleet of boats carrying 700 pro-Palestinian peace activists and 10,000 tonnes of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip.
The protestors took out a march from India Gate to the Israeli Embassy to condemn the attack, in which at least 10 people died.
CPI-M leader Sitaram Yechury said the attack is unlawful and against the international law, adding that the Central Government should withdraw itself from buying any weapons from Israel.
“We want an international action against Israel for violating international law. Secondly, we want the government of India to suspend all its economic relations with Israel because whatever we are buying from Israel is only financing Israeli attacks on Palestinians,” said Yechury.
“We (India) today are the single largest purchaser of Israeli weapons. Today India is negotiating a free trade agreement with Israel. Now all this will only finance further attacks on the Palestinians and India should not be party to such a thing. We want our government to suspend all this immediately,” he added.
Swami Agnivesh, a noted social activist, while condemning the Israeli act said the United States has not been against it and is supporting a country that has nuclear weapons.
“America talks about peace and harmony, but on the other hand, does not say anything against a country like Israel that has nuclear weapons. United States will talk about other countries being a nuclear threat, like Iran, and why it enriches Uranium.” said Agnivesh.
“But America does not have anything to say to a country like Israel which is known to have nuclear bombs,” he added. (ANI)
