President, Vice President condole demise of Pandit Bhimsen Joshi
January 24th, 2011 - 8:13 pm ICT by ANINew Delhi, Jan 24 (ANI): President Pratibha Devisingh Patil and Vice President Mohammad Hamid Ansari have deeply condoled the passing away of Bharat Ratna Hindustani classical vocalist Pandit Bhimsen Joshi.
President Patil in her condolence message said: “Pandit Bhimsen Joshi was one of the most acclaimed exponents of Khayal Gayki of the Kirana Gharana and a doyen of Hindustani classical music. In his passing away the nation has lost one of the greatest and most popular classical vocalists.”
In his condolence message, Vice President Ansari said that Pandit Bhimsen Joshi was unique in preserving tradition while incorporating new ideas in his music.
“I am deeply grieved to learn about the sad demise of Pandit Bhimsen Joshi, Bharat Ratna awardee and one of the titans of Hindustani music of our times. Pandit Bhimsen Joshi was unique in preserving tradition while incorporating new ideas in his music. He has thus become a living tradition in Hindustani music with tremendous influence on classical musicians, music lovers and the general public,” said Vice President Ansari.
“His rendering of devotional and patriotic songs are etched in public memory. By his personal example, he has demonstrated that a thirst for knowledge and music can propel individuals with limited means to seek such learning against all odds. His loss has created a huge void in the world of music. His services and contribution to music shall always be remembered,” he added.
The Vice President further said : “My wife joins me in sending our heartfelt condolences to the members of the bereaved family and the wide circle of his admirers and friends and pray the Almighty to give them strength to withstand this loss.”
Pandit Bhimsen Joshi passed away this morning at Pune’s Sahyadri Hospital after a prolonged illness. He was 89. (ANI)
