President, PM greet India on Ugadi, Gudi Padava, Chetti Chand, Chaitra Sukladi

New Delhi, Apr 4 (ANI): President Pratibha Patil and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today greeted the nation on the occasion of Chaitra Sukladi, Ugadi, Gudi Padava, Chetti Chand, Navreh and Sajibu Cheiraoba which is being celebrated in different parts of the country.
Patil said these festivals may bring prosperity, happiness and also promote a spirit of oneness and harmony.
Dr Singh said these traditional New Year festivals not only signfy the amazing cultural diversity of the country but also attest to its essential unity.
He said, these festivals are occasions of joy and happiness and provide an occasion to take stock of the days gone by and plan and look to the future with hope.
Gudi Padwa, the Maharashtrian New Year is being celebrated across Maharashtra. It marks the advent of spring with hopes of a cheerful and pleasant future.
In traditional Maharashtrain homes, Gudi made with colourful silk cloth, decorated with marigold flowers, coconuts, sweets and mango leaves, are hung outside the houses, which symbolises nature’s bounty. Special delicacies like puran polis, soonth pak and usal are also prepared on the occasion.
Suburbs in Mumbai like Dombivli, Kalyan and Thane take out New Year processions to mark the occasion in a public spirit. (ANI)
