President Patil to watch WC cricket final along with her Lankan counterpart
March 31st, 2011 - 3:21 pm ICT by ANIMumbai, Mar 31 (ANI): President Pratibha Devisingh Patil and her Sri Lankan counterpart Mahinda Rajapaksa will watch the World Cup cricket final at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on April 2.
According to reports, President Patil, who has been following the game, will be flying to Mumbai to watch the high-profile event.
Reports from Colombo said that President Rajapaksa will watch the Sri Lankan cricket team take on India in the World Cup final.
“The President will go to Mumbai to watch the final match. The President and his three sons were keen spectators on Tuesday night when Sri Lanka beat New Zealand to reach the final to meet India,” Rajapaksa’s spokesman Bandula Jayasekera told reporters in Colombo.
“He (Rajapaksa) wants Sri Lanka to win the World Cup as a tribute to Muttiah Muralitharan who retires from international cricket after this World Cup,” he added.
Rajapaksa had visited the Caribbean when Sri Lanka reached the final of the 2007 World Cup with Australia.
India kept the dreams of billions alive after sinking Pakistan by 29 runs in their World Cup semi-final on Wednesday to set up an all-Asian final against Sri Lanka.
The 1983 champions posted 260-9 and then returned to bowl out their neighbours for 231 in 49.5 overs to spark jubilant celebrations at the Punjab Cricket Association Stadium.
Sri Lanka has played four one-dayers at this venue, including a league match in this tournament against New Zealand. Out of those four, they have won two and lost two.
A total of 14 ODIs have been held at the Wankhede since the inaugural clash between India and Sri Lanka. (ANI)
