Pranab tells opponents of land acquisition to know their limits

December 25th, 2007 - 10:12 pm ICT by admin -

Kolkata, Dec 25 (ANI): Senior Congress leader and External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee on Tuesday said that those opposing the land acquisition for setting up industries must ‘know their limits’.
“Those who are opposing land acquisition, they should know their limits - when to oppose and when not to,” Mukherjee said at a function in Kulti in West Bengal. Urging the people to be tolerant to the issue of industrial development in the State that requires land acquisition, Mukherjee said, “Wherever development projects are undertaken, land is needed.”
“We have to be tolerant,” he added.
The row over land acquisition has turned out to be a violent one in West Bengal, where the State government is facing violent protests from farmers and social activists led by opposition Trinamool Congress.
The violent protests over the land acquisition for setting up of a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Nandigram led to police firing and death of several people.
A similar situation developed in Singur where farmers opposed the land acquisition for setting up a car factory of Tata Motors. (ANI)
