Sheikh Hasina Agartala (Tripura), Mar.30 (ANI): Four trailers of equipment meant for the 726 mega watt gas-based Palatana thermal project being executed by the Oil and Natural Gas Commission (ONGC) have reached Agartala from Bangladesh.

Four trailers, three of 120 wheels and one of 128, carrying four over dimensional cargoes (ODCs) weighing about 326 tonnes entered Tripura from the Ashuganj port in Bangladesh.

The consignment came via Hyderabad to Kolkata and from there it went to Ashuganj Port by the river route, from where it was carried in trailers to the Akhaura border.

Pradeep Pandia, an official of the ABC transporter, which is transshipping the consignment, thanked the Bangladesh government for its co-operation in allowing the transshipping of the turbines.

Pandia said: ” We have safely brought this turbine engine from the Ashugunj port in Bangladesh. There have been no injuries or damage. The Bangladesh government has been very supportive of us. We Indians are happy as this is for the power plant and to generate energy.”

A major constraint in the project was the transportation of huge turbines and power equipment to the province through the single-lane national highway that passes through hilly terrain with several sharp curves, due to which India had asked the Bangladesh government’s help in allowing the transportation through its water and land territory to Tripura, which is surrounded by Bangladesh from three sides.

Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, had agreed to allow the transshipment of heavy machineries in January 2010 on her visit to Delhi

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had laid the foundation stone for the 4500 crore Rupees Palatana project on October 29, 2005. (ANI)
